A Small Treat

It occurs to me to mention a pleasant piece of information I received the night before I left Vancouver.

I was talking with my friend Rhea Rose, beside whom I sat at VCon in 2004 and wrote the first draft of my story "The Coin", about a boy living on the streets of Cap Haitien, in northern Haiti.

Rhea, apart from being a talented writer of speculative fiction and a stunning beauty, is a teacher. She told me that when from time to time she has a particularly subtle and intelligent student, she assigns that story to her or him and asks them to write an essay about it.

I was delighted. I can't think of a greater compliment or a better use for a story.

Thanks, Rhea!
